Colouring is a contentious issue amongst woodturners. Below are some results of my experimenting with two styles.

Using acrylic paint may be seen as sacrilegious to some but on rather plain pieces of timber I believe it has its place. It certainly cannot be used to cover up a turner's shortcomings as any 'flat or misdirection' in the curve is magnified.  Therefore using such bold colour does mean that it is imperative that the shape be perfect.

Alternatively, judicious and creative use of water-based inks can be utilised to enhance the timber's quality without obliterating the existing grain beauty.
